MISAKI KAWAI

Misaki Kawai was born in 1978 and grew up in Osaka, Japan. Her Father being an architect and Sunday painter, and her mother making clothing and puppets by hand. Like many other adolescent Japanese girls, she was influenced by western pop culture to a fanatical degree. She was greatly fascinated with 60’s fashion and hippie culture, often following her mother’s example and hand making clothes for herself. Although her mother’s needlework was impeccable, Misaki favored a more haphazard handmade look. Australian label and The Goodhood Store favorite Perks & Mini recently commissioned Misaki to design a Cowichan inspired cardigan. Take a look at our feature here.

Carhartt Heritage Preview

On September 20th we shall be launching the Carhartt Heritage line in the Goodhood Store and online. To coincide with the launch we have teamed up with Carhartt to hold an exclusive exhibition on the evening of the 20th of some early Carhartt pieces from the archives – dating as far back as 1900′s. The event will be one for any workwear and denim enthusiast. See a teaser of the Carhartt Heritage collection below.

Cycle enthusiasts and Goodhood Store favourites Perks & Mini have put together a ltd edition tee with Mash San Francisco’s famed fixed gear cycle crew. PAM continue to collaborate with the best names in the business, is there no end to their list of collaborators. This one has certainly split public opinion – the god squad have got busy commenting on this graphic. Personally the Egyptian tickler brought a smile to our faces!

In case you haven’t had the chance to see the wood wood aw collection yet, have a look at this video previewing whats to come. After seeing the collection a couple of weeks ago, i think Wood Wood have stepped it up again to produce a cleaner collection that is worked into more, in terms of tailored details. We are very pleased to let you know that the new collaboration collection between us and R. Newbold has started to arrive from Tokyo, and boy is it looking good, if you don’t mind us saying so. First up, follow your eyes to the striped parka – we are rating this as a flawless summer jacket, it ticks all the boxes for us and it has a removable hood that reveals a very neat shawl collar. Also we have an amazing reversible double layered shirt – check on one side, neon flecked chambray on the other – yes you read that right: Neon Flecked Chambray! It simply doesn’t get better than that! Or maybe we can actually turn the dial to 11!! We have our pink or faded red if you prefer jeans in, they have a faded, preppy feel to them with the bright colour reserved for the inside, perfectly revealed when you turn them up!! Before we all disappear into a sea of brown cord, come on people you know we need a bit of colour in this here wardrobe of ours. Please don’t overlook the jersey pieces - the pocket tee, has leopard print binding and the sweats are just plain nice. Please click here to view.

Russell Maurice Exhibiting in LA

One of the most influential streetwear designers of recent times has to be Russel Maurice of, Gasius. But Russel’s also an accomplished artist (which is actually what first got him into clothes production) and some of his work is soon to be shown as part of an exhibition being held in Los Angeles. Opening 2 days ago on the 20th February and running through until March the 13th, the Scion Installation LA Gallery is hosting an exhibition entitled ‘It Was on Earth That I Knew Joy’ which explores the theme of Man vs. Machine and the increasingly blurry boundaries between humans and the technology we create.

The show is being curated by Sixpack France and will feature their new short film (also called ‘It Was on Earth That I Knew Joy’) along with a variety of installations and 15 original posters including an exclusive design by Gasius main-man Russel. Ok, Los Angeles is a long way to go for a show, but Russel’s been fairly quite recently so it’s nice to know what he’s been up to, and if you’re in L.A. while the shows on, it definitely sounds worth taking a look!

Spike Jonze Rules, Ok?

Those who read this journal on a regular basis will know that we’ve constantly got our eyes peeled for news on our favourite brands, so here’s the latest…Opening Ceremony recently collaborated with music video, short film and movie directing legend Spike Jonze on a line of gear to celebrate the release of Spike’s take on Maurice Sendak’s Where the Wild Things Are. For anyone who hasn’t heard of Spike Jonze, firstly where there hell have you been? Secondly, he’s the guy responsible for some of the greatest music promos of all time like Sabotage by the Beastie Boys and Drop by Pharcyde.

He’s our kinda guy – smart, uncomplicated ideas brilliantly realized…you’ll love him. If your in New York Check the Opening Ceremony windows as Jonze has fitted out their window display with designs and props from his recent short film about lovelorn robots called “I’m Here” and, simply put, it looks great. They worked with artist Meryl Smith who actually created some of the original props for the film and they’ve also got hold of three copies of the limited edition “I’m Here” flipbook– take a look at it on youtube – just search for “opening ceremony flipbook” and enjoy.
