As the year draws to a close, we bring together our extended Goodhood family for another edition of our Think Zine, to find out the highs, the lows, the what ifs and where we go from here…

Musician (@professorgreen)

What’s been your favourite film of 2018?

The Great Beauty. It didn't come out this year but I was introduced to it recently by a Croatian girl who I thought was named after a moth (patania). Turns out her name's Tatjana and I'd misheard her. Anyway, great film.

Who’s been the hero of the year, and why?

Rag 'N' Bone Man. Without him, our song and my current single ‘Photographs’ wouldn’t have seen the light of day. Absolute G.

Who’s been the villain of the year, and why?

Calvin Harris. No further comment.

What're you looking forward to in 2019?

The end of December. I'm writing this on Dec 17th and I've had enough. I know too many Sagittarians and too many people who throw Christmas parties. I'm done. My liver hates me.

What has been the worst collab of the year?

The conservatives and DUP coalition is kinda sick still. Also, what's Brexit?

This year we lost Aretha Franklin. Will anyone ever come close to defining a genre again?

I don't think so, in the sense that beyond the birth of a new genre it's nigh on impossible.

Canada became the first Western nation to legalise weed this year. Who’s going to be next?

Someone who doesn't have a repetitive robot in charge of it, so probably not us.

What’s the future of privacy?

It's already on the brink of being non-existent, so I reckon it'll join dinosaurs on the extinct list.

Are we ever going to solve climate change?

Nah, but it'll solve us…

Will Elon Musk colonise Mars? Or will someone beat him to it?

Hopefully, he does or we can trick all the scumbags of earth that he has and we can stick them all in aircraft that combusts as soon as they leave the earth's atmosphere, thus solving us being overpopulated - and maybe even the aforementioned climate problems.

The Merriam-Webster dictionary selected 'Justice' as its 2018 Word of the Year, whilst the Oxford dictionary selected ‘Toxic’. Who’s right?

Canada became the first Western nation to legalise weed this year. Who’s going to be next?

Whoever tries, hurry up! Before Martians colonise the earth…

Stephen Hawking was a very clever man. If you could go back and ask him one question, what would it be?

I’d ask him his thoughts on Octavia Butler.

This year we lost Aretha Franklin. Will anyone ever come close to defining a genre again?

Yes, I believe so, but do we care is the real question.

Does any one person define a genre? I don’t think by the very nature of the word you can fairly encapsulate a movement into a sole representative. But she was a mammoth loss for culture.

What’s the future of privacy?

There is no future when it comes to privacy as we currently define it. Only a developing and continuous readjustment of what we individually deem acceptable boundaries.

The Merriam-Webster dictionary selected 'Justice' as its 2018 Word of the Year, whilst the Oxford dictionary selected ‘Toxic’. Who’s right?

I think toxic, especially referring to the environmental problems we face and the crippling effect of toxic masculinity.

What a crazy year it’s been on the planet earth. The world is a-changin' and what better way to bring it to a close than touching base with some of our friends. We hope you can appreciate the common points we all meet on and share in the positive vibrations of every human on this planet. We are all the same, remember... except maybe you have that Wacko jacket that is particularly ill. We’ve found the year to be a rollercoaster, and are particularly interested in finding ways for humans to connect together with positive consequences.

We’ve found it important this year to hear people, give them some credibility and accept that they could have an opinion we might learn from, however difficult it is to hear. How we learn and move forward is by making mistakes and we have to be able to let people make mistakes without the need to destroy them. When, early in the year, one customer expressed outrage at some particularly offensive pin badges, in their opinion, we were faced with a dilemma. Pull the products on the will of one who threatened us with press exposure from a morally virtuous position, or exercise our right to freedom of speech. You have a right to be offended but not to close the dialogue down. In the end, we compromised through our own assessment of whether there was any utility in expressing ourselves in such a way at that moment in time. Did we get it right? Please, do let us know! The feedback from our network is incredibly positive. Despite the obvious social and cultural shortcomings around the world and, generally, despite the lunatic political systems currently doing their best to completely fuck the world up, things are apparently getting better.

One of the absolute highlights of this year for us was refurbishing the Curtain Road store. We were so pleased to see the end results and no sooner had we completed the refit, our entire shop front was covered with scaffolding by a developer building extra floors on the top of the building. Take the rough with the smooth, I guess. But reality has a particularly funny way of playing out.

Aye well, as the stoics would say, or my old Grandad might have expressed, as social beings, the path to happiness for humans is found in accepting the moment as it presents itself, by not allowing oneself to be controlled by the desire for pleasure or the fear of pain, by using one's mind to understand the world and to do one's part in nature's plan, and by working together and treating others fairly and justly. Sounds good to me.

So on that note me, Jo and the whole of this company wish you all an amazing 2019, and send plenty of good vibes your way.

Peace, Kyle x
