X-Girl

The notion of musicians having their own fashion labels started well before the arrival of the 350s Boost, 700s and Cactus Jack Air Jordans. Way back in the early 1990s there was a vibrant scene, particularly in New York where Sonic Youth's Kim Gordon started the now iconic X-Girl label.

After a conversation with X-Large founder - and Beastie Boy - Mike D, she teamed up with X-Large store employee and stylist Daisy von Furth to create a brand that girls like them wanted to wear.  The silhouettes were inspired by the mod movement, Godard Girls and streetwear; fusing feminine staples, like mini skirts and a-line dresses, with a “No Lycra, nothing tight” ethos and a maximum $60.

X-Girl soon gathered an army of loyal followers, including Sofia Coppola, Spike Jonze and Chloë Sevigny, all of whom were present at the brand's infamous opening fashion show, where they showed their DIY, anti-establishment ethos by hijacking Marc Jacobs NYFW show with megaphones and spray-painted signs. Words don't do it justice, check out the specially commissioned video of the event below, to see exclusive interviews with Kim, Spike Jonze, Chloë Sevigny and more...
