Brian Eno effectively invented a genre with Ambient 1: Music for Airports in 1978, designing music meant to be "as ignorable as it is interesting" — slow, looping piano and voice pieces built to calm rather than command attention. Decades on, it's still the reference point for ambient music, as influential in galleries and spas as it was in the airport lounges it was written for.
