25 years of one of the most influential electronic albums to be released on a British record label; Nightmares On Wax's Carboot Soul. Just in time for Record Store Day, we catch up with George Evelyn AKA DJ E.A.S.E AKA Nightmares On Wax. We chat all things growing with your label, best London venues, funny club stories, and more...
GOODHOOD: Congratulations on 25 years of Carboot Soul! When you first made the record, did you have any idea it would build the cultural legacy it has?
NIGHTMARES ON WAX: I had no idea. At the time my whole focus was on making a record that wasn’t a concept album, as I was coming off the back of Smokers Delight which was huge for me and Warp. So all I was thinking about was breaking away from that concept format and trying to make a song based album. The fact that it was as successful as it was at the time and means so means so much to new fans and old fans today is massive to me.
GH: For those who don’t know, how would you best describe yourself as an artist?
NOW: A orchestrator of sounds. Musician. Composer. DJ.
GH: We’ve heard you’re longest standing signed artist at Warp. How have you grown and evolved as an artist whilst being surrounded by the mega talent on the Warp roster?
NOW: My first was Warp release was the 2nd ever release. The founders and the people that run the label are like family. I’ve known of them for so long and we’ve shared so much. I’d say both me as an artist and the the label have grown together in so many over the years.
GH: Favourite club/venue in London?
NOW: Phonox.
GH: What’s your favourite city you’ve performed in?
NOW: Too many to mention but any excuse to play in Thailand or Tokyo.
GH: What’s the funniest thing you’ve witnessed in a club/venue, as either a performer or spectator…
NOW: I remember being at a party and seeing a steak stuck to the bottom of a high heel shoe and laughing endlessly only to find out it hand fallen out of a friends handbag!
GH: Dead or alive, dream DJ to play with?
NOW: That’s a great question. Today I’m going with Larry Levan but at an after party.
GH: What’s the best gig you’ve been to?
NOW: Impossible to answer!
GH: If you could only listen to one record for the rest of your life, what would you choose, and why?
NOW: What’s going on? Marvin Gaye.
GH: What are you reading at the moment?
NOW: Wrapt that money can’t buy - Robin Sharma.
GH: Anything exciting currently in the works you can tell us about?
NOW: Putting the finish touches to me new record!
