Recorded in 1971, Thembi finds Pharoah Sanders moving through spiritual jazz's outer reaches with a lighter, more exploratory touch than his Impulse! labelmates — synths and electric piano sitting alongside his searching saxophone. "Astral Traveling" in particular has become a touchstone for generations of jazz-influenced producers.
